The Immigration Experience: Two Cultures, One Home

Immigration is, and always has been, a large part of Canada’s multicultural identity; every new wave of immigrants contributes to our nation’s unique ‘mosaic’ of distinct ethnic groups and cultures that coexist within society. As time passed, the immigrant experience has changed remarkably, especially concerning an immigrant’s reception upon their arrival, their initial settlement and adjustment to life in Canada, and their effectual impact on future generations. The Irish immigrants of the nineteenth century and the Chinese immigrants of the twentieth century are two groups that stand as testimony to how the process of immigration has changed throughout history, with both groups playing influential roles in shaping Canada to become the proud nation that it is today.
