Project: the Klondike Kateʼs

about two women during the klondike gold rush that where nicknamed Klondike Kate. The more famous dancehall, Kathleen Rockwell and the first woman constable Katherine Ryan.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

Kathleen was imprisoned by Katherine for being a prostitute at the start of her career as a dance hall girl. Katherine dealt with all the female prisoners.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

the way most people the klondike was hiking over the Chilkoot trail which i did with my class. After that we studied the Klondike and it was all a very cool experience. I also canoed with my class from Minto to Dawson.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

When i hiked the Chilkoot i had high teck equipment, they had huge pack normal boots and the women had dresses!

I am sure you did a great job on your Klondike Kate project. She was my Great Great Aunt. When I was younger my grandfather and family never spoke too much of her because they too had heard of the other Klondike Kate and because news traveled so slow from the west and north they didn't know the show girl wasn't their Kate. They were ashamed. A local friend and author, Anne Brennan researched and published a book about her " The Real Klondike Kate". It is a good read. Here in Johnville New Brunswick we also enjoyed your skit on Katherine Ryan.
