Life on the Hardie Homestead

My project is on my Grandma Pat, who is on my mom's side of the family. It tells about her life growing up on a homestead. It has funny stories, good pictures, and lots of interesting facts.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned was that my Grandma's life was very different than I thought. First I learned about the stuff they did for fun, like horse races and going to movies for 25 cents. Secondly I learned that my Grandma had to board with other families in town during the winter. Another interesting fact was that sometimes sheep would fall through the ice on the river and their wool would stick to the edge of the hole and they would have to chop the sheep out.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Back then they had a lot more jobs and responsibilities. Our life is a lot easier because we have plumbing, running water, and electricity. So we should be happy with what we have today.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My Grandma had a lot more chores and spent more time outdoors with the animals on the farm. We have fewer chores and spend more time inside with games. We have an easier life now than when Grandma was my age.

Comments from another Young Citizen! Denzel from AB says:

What was your favourite part of this video?: My grandpa lives on the original family homestead near Bowden, Alberta which is close to Nordegg and Rocky Mtn. House which you talked about in the video. I really enjoyed you tracing your family's heritage and being able to follow, and even recognize some of the places.

What do you think this Young Citizen did really well?: Wyatt traced his family's heritage well using pictures and conversation to keep the viewer's interest! I VOTED FOR YOU WYATT! Interesting video!

What did you learn from the video?: Wyatt's Great Grandfather may have made cutlines and other road ways with my great grandfather, Emil Schmidt who also worked in the Clearwater/Nordegg area!!!

Any other comments you’d like to share with this Young Citizen?: I really enjoyed your video and even forwarded it for my family and friends to watch!
