An Independant Nation: Canada’s Great Achievements

Increased economic dependence on the United States before the twentieth century led Canadian Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, to declare “...the nineteenth century was the century of the United States,” in 1940. An extension of his quote challenges this view, with his statement, “I think we can claim that Canada will fill the twentieth century.” Laurier was referring to his prediction that the country would achieve the maximum amount of social and economic growth as a nation. His bold proclamation proved to be true, as Canada’s social and economic growth was increasingly evident by its advancements in numerous fields including militaristic power, political influence, and medical innovation. Wilfrid Laurier was correct in stating that Canada would “fill” the 20th century, as not only did Canada’s advancements have a national impact, but they also helped the country achieve an esteemed global presence.
