Métis Reconciliation in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Historic interactions and events are the formation of contemporary relationships and communications with neighbouring peoples. If the relations and treatment of people in the past are negative, this will continue to shape interaction and relationships of those living in the contemporary world. While the modern world is unable to change the actions of its ancestors, people today can reconcile their relationships with people who have been wronged. As noted in the 2016 Statistics Canada census, there were 45,635 Métis residents living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With the recognition that the Métis population is growing in Winnipeg, it is appropriate to make efforts towards reconciling a relationship that is considered by many to have been broken by their ancestors. Winnipeg citizens in the contemporary world can achieve this reconciliation by learning about the history of the Métis people by means of: elders sharing oral traditions, instructional programs offering kinesthetic learning, and social media.
